Equipment Troubleshooting FAQ

Last updated: October 14, 2026

These are the problems customers ask us about most, and what fixed them. Each answer follows the same layout: symptoms, likely causes, how to fix it, the parts that fix it, and when to call us. Start with the quick answer. If that doesn't solve it, work through the steps.

Before you start: shut the machine off and relieve pressure before working on it. Component warranties are handled by each manufacturer, and routine maintenance is the owner's responsibility. If you're unsure, stop and call us. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Pressure Pumps & Unloaders

Why is my pressure washer losing pressure?

Quick answer: Most pressure loss comes from debris in or cracked pump check valves, or an unloader that is stuck bypassing. Put a pressure gauge on the pump with the unloader turned all the way up; it should read close to the machine's rated PSI. If it reads low, rebuild the check valves or replace the unloader.

Symptoms

  • Pressure drops off during the job or never reaches rated PSI
  • Unloader seems to bypass constantly while you are on the trigger
  • Pulsing or uneven spray at the tip

Likely causes

  • Debris stuck in a pump check valve, or a cracked check valve
  • Unloader constantly bypassing (worn or out of adjustment)

How to fix it

  1. Install a pressure gauge on the pump outlet.
  2. Turn the unloader all the way up (max).
  3. Run the machine on the trigger and read the gauge. It should be close to the rated pressure (for example ~3,500 PSI on a 3,500 PSI machine).
  4. If pressure is low, pull and inspect the check valves for debris or cracks and clean or replace them.
  5. If the check valves are good and the unloader keeps bypassing, replace the unloader.

When to contact us: Contact us with a photo or video of the gauge reading at max unloader. Pump repairs on new machines may fall under the pump manufacturer's warranty. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Why do my unloaders keep breaking or snapping?

Quick answer: Repeated unloader failures are usually caused by operation, not a bad part: rapidly cycling the trigger on and off, or running a tip that is too small for the machine. A too-small tip can spike pressure well above the unloader's rating.

Symptoms

  • Unloader breaks or snaps more than once
  • Pressure spikes or loud banging when you let off the trigger

Likely causes

  • Rapid on/off trigger cycling
  • Tip too small for the machine's flow (example from our shop: a 0040 tip on an 8 GPM machine spiked over 5,000 PSI)

How to fix it

  1. Replace the damaged unloader.
  2. Check every tip you run and make sure it is sized for your machine's GPM and PSI.
  3. Avoid rapid trigger cycling; let off and stay off, or stay on.
  4. If failures continue, have the system pressure checked with a gauge.

What oil does my pump and gearbox take, and does it come filled?

Quick answer: Our pumps typically ship pre-filled. Gearboxes take 80W90 gear oil; pumps take ND30 or AW100. If the pump has a solid (non-vented) shipping cap, swap it for the vented cap before running. Run the machine 4–5 minutes, then check and top off.

Symptoms

  • Not sure if the pump has oil
  • Oil leaking from the cap or breather after first run

Likely causes

  • Non-vented shipping cap left on the pump
  • Checking the level before the oil has circulated

How to fix it

  1. Check whether the pump has a solid shipping cap. Replace it with the vented cap.
  2. Run the machine for 4–5 minutes.
  3. Shut down, check the oil level, and top off if needed.
  4. Use 80W90 in the gearbox and ND30 or AW100 in the pump.

When to contact us: If oil looks milky or keeps leaking, stop running the pump and contact us. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Why is my pump oil milky or why is water/oil leaking from the pump?

Quick answer: Milky oil or water leaking from the pump means a seal has failed. On belt-drive machines a misaligned belt can break the seal. Stop running the pump and contact us; on new machines this is handled through the pump/machine manufacturer's warranty.

Symptoms

  • Oil looks milky or creamy
  • Water dripping from the pump
  • Oil leaking near the belt side of the pump

Likely causes

  • Failed pump seal
  • Belt misalignment putting side load on the pump shaft (belt-drive units)

How to fix it

  1. Stop running the machine to avoid more damage.
  2. Take photos/video of the leak and the oil.
  3. On belt-drive units, check belt alignment.
  4. Contact us to start a warranty or repair.

Why are the bolts on my belt guard backing out or the belt housing cracking?

Quick answer: Belt-guard bolts backing out or a cracked belt-housing weld on a new BE belt-drive machine has been handled as a warranty repair. Stop running it if the belt or pulleys are loose and contact us.

Symptoms

  • Belt cover bolts loose or missing
  • Crack at the belt housing weld
  • New noise or vibration from the belt area

Likely causes

  • Bolts backing out from vibration
  • Weld failure on the belt housing

How to fix it

  1. Shut the machine off and check all belt-guard bolts.
  2. Do not run with a loose guard or cracked housing.
  3. Take photos and contact us for warranty.

Softwash Pumps (P40, AR, 12V)

Why is my softwash hose jumping, pulsing, or bursting on my P40?

Quick answer: The P40 is usually running too much pressure. Run the throttle at about 3/4 (about 1.5 inches back from full), turn the unloader all the way up and then back down 2 turns. Working pressure should be about 175–200 PSI; much higher will overpressure softwash hose.

Symptoms

  • Hose jumps or kicks on the reel or ground
  • Hose bursts
  • Pressure surge when you open the gun

Likely causes

  • Throttle at full
  • Unloader set too high (setting at 300 PSI can spike over 400 PSI)
  • Hose not rated for the pressure (e.g., suction hose used on the pressure side)

How to fix it

  1. Set the throttle to about 3/4 (about 1.5" back from full, 75% or less).
  2. Turn the unloader all the way up (toward the + on the green cap), then turn it back down 2 full turns.
  3. Check with a gauge: target about 175–200 PSI working pressure.
  4. Replace any burst hose with rated softwash hose.

When to contact us: If the hose still jumps at the right settings, contact us; there may be air in the system (see the air and lost-flow question below). Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Why is my P40 or roof pump sucking air, losing flow, or showing bubbles?

Quick answer: Air usually gets in through the plumbing: the bypass line dumping back into the tank that feeds the pump inlet, a cracked soap check valve on the proportioner, a loose fitting, or an inlet that is fed wrong. Fix the plumbing before replacing the pump.

Symptoms

  • Bubbles in the line or gun
  • Flow comes and goes
  • Hose jumps even at correct pressure
  • New machine seems to be 'failing'

Likely causes

  • Bypass hose returning into the tank that feeds the pump (stirs air into the inlet)
  • Cracked 1/2" soap check valve on the proportioner
  • Garden hose dumping into the tank right at the pump intake (cavitation)
  • Inlet plumbed wrong (e.g., bottom-fed when it should be top-fed), wrong bypass hose, or loose bulkheads/fittings

How to fix it

  1. Route the bypass so it does not dump into the tank feeding the pump inlet. On AR45/AR60 setups with a proportioner, loop about 25 ft of bypass hose back to the pump intake, not to the buffer tank.
  2. Inspect the soap check valve on the proportioner: unscrew the collar on top of the metering valve, drop the valve out, remove the check valve and nipples, check for cracks, retape and reinstall.
  3. Move the garden hose fill away from the pump intake.
  4. Check every bulkhead, fitting, bolt and strap for tightness.

When to contact us: If you can't find the leak, send the proportioner or pump in. We offer a free bench test. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

How do I re-prime a 12V softwash pump that ran dry or airlocked?

Quick answer: Remove the inlet barb to let the trapped air out, reconnect it, then run the pump with the outlet disconnected until water flows. Reconnect the outlet and run for 30–45 seconds.

Symptoms

  • 12V pump runs but doesn't pull
  • Pump ran dry and won't pick back up

Likely causes

  • Air lock after running dry

How to fix it

  1. Remove the inlet barb (slide the retaining tab out and twist).
  2. Reconnect the inlet barb.
  3. Disconnect the outlet and run the pump until water flows out.
  4. Reconnect the outlet and run for 30–45 seconds.

When to contact us: If it still won't prime, check the suction side for air leaks (loose hose, oversized hose on small barbs, cracked fittings) or contact us. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Proportioners & Chemical Mixing

Why isn't my proportioner pulling enough SH (bleach)?

Quick answer: Check the filter at the bottom of the SH tank (it can float up in transit), check your SH strength (10% pulls weaker than 12.5%, so turn the dial up 1–2 numbers), and check for air leaks at camlocks and bulkheads. If the pull is still inconsistent, replace the metering valve.

Symptoms

  • Mix looks weak
  • SH pull inconsistent
  • Have to run the dial unusually high

Likely causes

  • Pickup filter floated up off the bottom of the tank
  • Weaker SH than the chart assumes
  • Air leak at a camlock or a cracked tank bulkhead
  • Worn metering valve
  • SH and water tanks fed differently (one top-fed, one bottom-fed)

How to fix it

  1. Make sure the pickup filter is sitting at the bottom of the SH tank.
  2. Check SH strength; if it's around 10%, turn the dial up 1–2 numbers.
  3. Bucket test: put the camlock and line in a bucket of water and watch for air bubbles/leaks. Check the tank bulkhead for cracks.
  4. Make sure both tank feeds are plumbed the same way (both top or both bottom).
  5. If pull is still inconsistent, replace the metering valve.

When to contact us: Send the proportioner in for a free rebuild/bench test if you can't find the cause. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Why is my proportioner leaking or cracked?

Quick answer: Fittings often loosen in shipping; tighten them a quarter turn. Don't over-tighten plastic fittings: hand tight plus one turn, no clamp pliers. A cracked soap check valve is the most common failure.

Symptoms

  • Drips at threaded fittings after delivery
  • Cracked check valve or fitting
  • Leak at the manifold

Likely causes

  • Fittings loosened in transit
  • Over-tightened plastic threads
  • Cracked soap check valve

How to fix it

  1. Tighten leaking fittings a quarter turn.
  2. If re-taping: one full wrap of tape, then half-overlapping wraps.
  3. Tighten plastic fittings hand tight plus one turn; never use clamp pliers on them.
  4. Replace any cracked check valve.

Why is SH getting into my water tank (or water into my SH tank)?

Quick answer: Backflow means a check valve is bad. SH in the water tank points to the water-line check valve (about 3/4"); water in the SH tank points to the SH-side check valve. Also close downstream manifold valves at the end of the day to stop siphoning.

Symptoms

  • Water tank smells like bleach
  • SH tank level rises or gets diluted

Likely causes

  • Failed check valve on the water line (SH into water)
  • Failed check valve on the SH side (water into SH)
  • Manifold valves left open overnight (siphon)

How to fix it

  1. Identify which direction the backflow is going.
  2. Replace the check valve on that side.
  3. Close downstream manifold valves at the end of every day.
  4. When switching from SH to flush, stay on the trigger 15–20 seconds; the lines hold 3–4 gallons.

My suction hose came off the barb. How do I fix it?

Quick answer: Cut about 2 inches off the end of the hose so you have a fresh end, push it fully onto the barb and re-clamp.

Symptoms

  • Hose pulled off a barb
  • Air leak at a hose barb

Likely causes

  • Stretched or damaged hose end

How to fix it

  1. Cut about 2" off the hose end.
  2. Push the hose all the way onto the barb.
  3. Re-clamp tightly.

Can I use crush-proof suction hose for my softwash line?

Quick answer: No. Crush-proof spiral hose is for suction only. Use rated ag/softwash hose on the pressure side.

Symptoms

  • Hose bulging or bursting on the pressure side

Likely causes

  • Suction hose used as pressure hose

How to fix it

  1. Use crush-proof hose only for suction lines.
  2. Use rated ag/softwash hose for the pump outlet and reel.

Should I put filters on my 1/4" chemical lines?

Quick answer: No inline filters on the 1/4" downstream chemical lines. Use a weighted strainer with check valve on the pickup end only.

Symptoms

  • Weak or no chemical draw after adding a filter

Likely causes

  • Inline filter restricting the 1/4" line

How to fix it

  1. Remove inline filters from 1/4" lines.
  2. Use a weighted strainer on the pickup end.

Downstream Injectors & Chemical Selectors

Why isn't my downstream injector pulling soap?

Quick answer: Check that the injector arrow points away from the pump toward the reel, that you're in low pressure (M5 twisted fully open or a large low-pressure tip), and that the chemical is selected on the downstream manifold. Injectors are consumables and typically need replacing every 1–3 months.

Symptoms

  • No soap at the gun
  • Weak draw

Likely causes

  • Worn injector (consumable)
  • Injector installed backwards
  • Still in high pressure; nozzle not open enough
  • Chemical not selected on the manifold
  • Inline filter on the 1/4" line

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the arrow on the injector points away from the pump, toward the reel.
  2. Switch to low pressure: twist the M5 fully open or use your largest, lowest-pressure tip.
  3. Select the chemical on the downstream manifold.
  4. Remove any inline filters from the 1/4" lines.
  5. If it still won't draw, replace the injector.

How does the Dominator 2-Step remote downstream system work and what do I need to install it?

Quick answer: Remote buttons 1 and 2 pick a chemical; off is flush. You need three 1/4" chemical lines, 3/8" pressure hose and a 12V battery with 3/8" lugs. It ships with a 2.3 injector (5–8 GPM); use a 2.1 for 4 GPM, and a 1/2" or ST-160 setup for 10+ GPM.

Symptoms

  • Not sure how to install or select chemicals
  • Bypass solenoid doesn't operate

Likely causes

  • Loose top nut on the bypass solenoid
  • Harness too short for the mounting location

How to fix it

  1. Run three 1/4" chemical lines, 3/8" pressure hose and 12V power (3/8" lugs).
  2. Use 3/8" plumbing under 10 GPM; 1/2" or an ST-160 for 10+ GPM.
  3. Match the injector: 2.3 for 5–8 GPM, 2.1 for 4 GPM.
  4. If the bypass solenoid won't operate, check that the top nut is tight.
  5. To extend the harness, splice with butt connectors. The boxes are waterproof.

12V Electrical & Remotes

My remote clicks but the valve or function doesn't work. What do I check?

Quick answer: Clicking relays mean the receiver is getting the signal. Check that the red wires are tight, the ground is on the engine block, and measure 12.0V or more at the output when the button is pressed. Reseat loose pins, and if needed re-pair the remote.

Symptoms

  • Relay clicks but nothing happens
  • One function works, another doesn't

Likely causes

  • Loose wire or pin at the receiver
  • Bad ground
  • Low voltage
  • Remote lost pairing
  • Motorized valve capacitors drained

How to fix it

  1. Check the red power wires are tight and the ground is on the engine block.
  2. With a voltmeter, measure between the negative screw (black wire, top-left of the board) and the output screw for that function while pressing the button. You want 12.0V or more.
  3. Loose pin: power off, loosen the screw, reseat the wire, retighten. For plug connectors, push the pin back in until it clicks.
  4. Re-pair: remove the rubber case, tap the bottom corner of the remote on the black magnet once (beep) and press 1; twice and press 2; three times and press 3.
  5. Motorized bypass valves: leave in SH mode 20–30 minutes to recharge the capacitors.

Is there a manual override if my remote dies?

Quick answer: Keep spare AA batteries for the remote. Don't manually override the valves; that can burn out the solenoids.

Symptoms

  • Remote dead or weak

Likely causes

  • Dead batteries

How to fix it

  1. Replace the remote batteries (AA).
  2. Keep spares on the rig.
  3. Do not bypass the solenoids manually.

When to contact us: If these steps don't fix it, contact us. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Is my rig battery bad, and do I need to charge it?

Quick answer: On rigs with 8 GPM and P40 engines, the engines recharge the battery while running. A 'bad battery' is usually a charging problem. Bring it in and we'll test it. Enclosed-trailer ceiling lights only work with the tow vehicle plugged in.

Symptoms

  • Battery runs down
  • Ceiling lights don't work

Likely causes

  • Charging issue
  • Trailer not plugged into the tow vehicle (lights)

How to fix it

  1. Run the engines to recharge the battery.
  2. Check terminals and cables.
  3. Plug the trailer into the tow vehicle to power the ceiling lights.
  4. If the battery keeps dying, bring it in for a load test.

Engines

My iGX800 is misfiring or won't run. Could it be the coil packs?

Quick answer: Yes. iGX800 coil packs are a known failure, and they can go on both sides. We recommend keeping a spare left and right coil set.

Symptoms

  • Misfire
  • Engine dies or won't start

Likely causes

  • Failed ignition coil pack (left, right or both)

How to fix it

  1. Inspect/test both coil packs.
  2. Replace failed coils; replace both if both are suspect.
  3. Keep a spare set on the rig.

Parts that fix it

When to contact us: Contact us if new coils don't fix it. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

What's the right way to start and run my engines?

Quick answer: Choke the engine on the first start of the day. On the P40, run about 3/4 throttle. On the pressure side, don't rapidly cycle the trigger.

Symptoms

  • Hard first start
  • Hose jumping at full throttle (P40)

Likely causes

  • No choke on a cold start
  • Running the P40 at full throttle

How to fix it

  1. Choke for the first start of the day.
  2. Run the P40 at about 3/4 throttle.

Why does my Honda pressure washer shut off with a solid red oil light when the oil level looks fine?

Quick answer: A solid red oil light means the engine thinks oil is low. On truck-mounted rigs, fill oil to the top of the dipstick. If oil is correct and it still shuts down after 20–30 minutes, unplug the remote start/stop harness and test — the remote stop circuit shuts the engine down through the oil sensor, so a bad remote kit can look exactly like a low-oil fault.

Symptoms

  • Engine shuts off after about 20–30 minutes of use
  • Solid red low-oil light
  • Oil looks clean and the dipstick shows a normal level

Likely causes

  • Oil a little low for the truck angle (sensor trips before the dipstick looks low)
  • Remote start/stop kit or harness falsely triggering the oil-sensor shutdown circuit

How to fix it

  1. Confirm 10W-30 motor oil and fill so the oil is at the top of the dipstick. Truck angle can trip the sensor even when the dipstick looks OK.
  2. If you've already confirmed or refilled the oil and it still shuts down with the red light, unplug the black start/stop/downstream remote harness next to the key switch (about 6" from the motor). Start and stop at the engine for this test; the downstream remote will not work while the harness is unplugged.
  3. Run past the 30-minute mark. If it runs fine with the harness unplugged, the remote kit or harness is shutting it down (the remote stop function works through the oil sensor). Contact us to repair or replace the remote kit — do not replace the oil pressure switch yet.
  4. If it still shuts down with the red light and the harness unplugged, clear the cooling fins and air intake, confirm the correct Honda oil filter for your engine, then contact us about the oil pressure switch.

When to contact us: Contact us if the harness test points to the remote kit, or if the engine still shuts down with the harness unplugged. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Hose Reels & Swivels

My hose reel swivel is seized or leaking. What do I do?

Quick answer: Grease the swivel with a grease gun (we use Red N' Tacky). If it's still seized or leaking, replace the swivel. Swivels on new reels may be covered by the reel manufacturer's warranty.

Symptoms

  • Reel hard to turn
  • Leak at the reel swivel

Likely causes

  • Dry or worn swivel
  • Failed swivel seals

How to fix it

  1. Grease the swivel with a grease gun.
  2. If it stays seized or leaks, replace the swivel.
  3. On new reels, contact us about warranty first.

Parts that fix it

When to contact us: Contact us if the reel is new; we'll check warranty. Call 813-686-7638 or email Info@CigarCitySoftwash.com (Mon–Fri, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM ET).

Why does the chain keep popping off my electric hose reel?

Quick answer: The motor sprocket is usually out of line with the reel sprocket. Line it up using the Allen set screw on the motor sprocket. Hose wrapped around poles or caught while rewinding adds stress and can throw the chain.

Symptoms

  • Chain jumps off
  • Grinding when rewinding

Likely causes

  • Misaligned motor sprocket
  • Extra load from hose wrapped on poles or snagged

How to fix it

  1. Loosen the Allen set screw on the motor sprocket.
  2. Line the motor sprocket up with the reel sprocket and retighten.
  3. Reinstall the chain; replace if stretched.
  4. Clear the hose path before rewinding.

Symptoms

  • Reel leaning or out of square
  • Chain misaligned after shipping

Likely causes

  • Shipping damage

How to fix it

  1. Photograph the damage and the box.
  2. Loosen the 8 bolts (4 front, 4 back).
  3. Straighten the reel, retighten and realign the chain.

Hot Water / Hotbox

Water is pouring out of my hotbox. Is the coil cracked?

Quick answer: Usually it isn't the coil. The rupture disc next to the inlet is usually what lets go, and some leaks are at the coil inlet fitting. If the coil is cracked, we need photos and a video to file a warranty claim.

Symptoms

  • Water pouring from the hotbox
  • Leak near the coil inlet

Likely causes

  • Blown rupture disc (next to the inlet)
  • Leaking coil inlet fitting
  • Cracked coil (less common)

How to fix it

  1. Find the leak source: rupture disc, inlet fitting or coil.
  2. Replace a blown rupture disc.
  3. Tighten or replace a leaking inlet fitting.
  4. For a suspected cracked coil, collect: photo of the coil serial plate, the unit serial number (blue sticker), a video of the leak and a photo of the burner chamber.

Why doesn't my softwash gun shoot as far as I expected?

Quick answer: It depends on the gun. The yellow Water Boss gun takes 1/4" threaded tips; with a Davis shooter tip it reaches about 60–65 ft. The orange gun has a built-in variable tip that reaches about 40–45 ft and wears out faster.

Symptoms

  • Short reach
  • Weak stream

Likely causes

  • Gun with a built-in variable tip (shorter reach)
  • Wrong or worn tip

How to fix it

  1. For the yellow Water Boss gun, use a 1/4" threaded Davis shooter tip (about 60–65 ft).
  2. Expect about 40–45 ft from the orange variable gun; replace it when worn.

Tanks, Plumbing & Trailers

Why is my water tank bulging or bending the tank straps?

Quick answer: The tank is being overfilled. Without a float valve, a fast fill (like a hydrant) overruns the small cap vents. Install a Hudson float valve and remove the cap or use the top overflow bulkhead so the tank can vent.

Symptoms

  • Tank sides bulging
  • Tank straps bent

Likely causes

  • Overfilling without a float valve
  • Fast fill (e.g., hydrant) with vents that are too small

How to fix it

  1. Stop filling as soon as you see bulging.
  2. Install a Hudson float valve.
  3. Remove the fill cap or use the top overflow bulkhead while filling.

I just got a new rig. What should I check before the first job?

Quick answer: Shipping vibration loosens things. Tighten leaking fittings a quarter turn, check bolts and straps, and know that loose nuts on delivery may be temporary lockbar pins. Choke the engines on the first start.

Symptoms

  • Small leaks after delivery
  • Loose nuts or bolts

Likely causes

  • Shipping vibration
  • Temporary shipping hardware (lockbar pins)

How to fix it

  1. Tighten any leaking fittings a quarter turn.
  2. Check bolts, bulkheads and tank straps.
  3. Choke engines on the first start of the day.
  4. Read the New Build User Manual.
